I know a great many of us have played Relic Entertainment's Space Marine by now. Many of us were looking forward to a series of sequels to find out what exactly happened to the main character from this video game. Flawed as the game might have been, this was one of the few video games licensed out by Games-Workshop that was not half bad to play. The game had it's issues, certainly, and was far from perfect but I regarded it as something fun to play. It was a piece of artwork that tried to tell a story set within the universe of Warhammer 40,000.
Games-Workshop eventually did state that the main character from Space Marine, Captain Titus, was from an alternate timeline where he was the Captain of the Ultramarines 3rd company; not the currently established Captain Cato Sicarius. Later on in a novel it is noted by Cato Sicarius that there was a status of Captain Titus. The statue depicted Titus as having been a Captain of the 3rd company of Ultramarines preceding Cato in that role. This was Games-workshop's subtle little nod to the character from the video game.
What does this all have to do with anything? Well, I decided that I wanted to explore on my own what could have happened to this character Titus? After discussing with several old friends different hypotheticals, we arrived at the conclusion that a home brew Captain Titus should be made. This would be a fun model to use on the table top and also a fun challenge of how to go about having the model itself created. But how would I do this? I am not very good at sculpting and at the moment I have to be selective with how I spend my hobby time... (Thank you very f*cking much 2020. I know I am not alone on this...) and I came to the conclusion that I would need to outsource this project to be a commission sculpt but where the hell do I start?
I googled for a while and kind of...fumbled around the internet in the dark. I ended up finding myself looking at a Professional sculptor's website by the name of Micah. At the time I did not know what exactly I was asking and certainly did not know who I was looking for to accomplish it. Fortunately, Micah took the time to explain what questions I needed to be asking and what type of sculptor I needed to be looking for. Micah is a professional sculptor who works on a very high level and does not do commissions from individuals but rather companies looking to create particular sculpts.
Having been armed with this new information I set back out into the wilds of the internets. Several websites, who boasted having talented sculptors, did not return my email. In some instances where they did, they would only take on a commission so long as they were the one's to be painting the sculpt as well. So, I hit another roadblock.
After spending some more time thinking, I wound up landing over at Fiverr. The sculptor I reached out to is named Peter. Peter had posted several commission images displaying that he was not only extremely talented but that he had also spent time honing his craft as a sculptor. Shortly after we interacted he agreed to take on the commission. Throughout the month of October something very awesome began to take form. What I can't say with words here, because that's how awesome Peter handled this commission, I will let pictures describe. Below are the photos that Peter sent me while he was sculpting this commission:
