For me, some of the original lines of hexagon paints had a vibrancy about them when built up over two or more really thin coats. The Blood Angels that are being resurrected were base coated using the original hexagon Blood Red.
A friend had told me about coat d'arms and how they were a close approximation of the original paints. I purchased a few pots to see how close they were. I will post some pictures at some point of swatches between the original paint, coat d'arms and some newer gw paint. (The latter of which I never get the new names right...)
